The most famous in Indonesia even in the world is Ijen crater also the biggest crater lake in Java. More than 450 volcanoes along the Pacific Ring of Fire, stretching in a horseshoe like arch from just north of New Zealand, up and around the Pacific coast to Peru and Chile. These volcanoes form the backbone of Sumatra, Java and Bali. Ijen crater in the nature reserve Ijen Park is located between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso District, East Java, Indonesia. From the Ijen crater also can be seen other volcano mountains as Mount Merapi which east part of Ijen crater and Mount Raung, Mount Suket, Mount Rante. The crater is located at the exact top of Mount Ijen, it’s inside of large caldera of Ijen which is about 20 kilo meters wide in .The sulfur crater lake spreads between a natural dams and deeply etched rock. Ijen crater shows a special stratovulcano feature common to Indonesia. It is about 722 meters (2,369 ft) in diameter and 200 meters (660 ft) in deep and contains about 36 million m3 of warm acid water. It is also recognised as the largest highly acidic crater lake in the world. This beautiful warm crater lake with its blue-green water looks very inviting. It has smelling hard sulfur cloud that comes from an active vent at the edge of the lake. In other sides there is sulfur mining operation at the edge of the crater . The miners who work to take the cooled sulfur climb and go down to the crater is attractive. They can carry the sulfur between 50 kg to 80 kg of the yellow cooled sulfur into his pairing basket, before they carry it, they have to dig the cooled sulfur. It can be natural view that can be seen everytime. Ijen is very beautiful also to be the first destination for tourists. The best time for seeing Ijen crater is at 8 to 9 AM.

About The Blue Fire
Ijen has another characteristic not only the beautiful view but there is a unusual natural phenomena which known as Blue fire . An active vent at the edge of the lake is a source of elemental sulfur, and and there is a mining operation inside . Escaping volcanic gases are channelled through a network of ceramic pipes, resulting in condensation of molten sulfur. The sulphur, which is deep red in colour when molten, flows slowly from the ends of these pipes and drops on the ground, it will becomes yellow hard sulfur. The Blue fire is ignited sulphuric gas, which long burning at temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius. The flames can reach up to 5 meters (16 feet) high and some of the gas condenses to liquid and is still ignited. It is also mentioned the largest Blue flame/Blue fire area in the world. It needs 1 until 2 hours hike to reach the rim of the crater, and 30 minutes to go down to the main crater. The best time for seeing the blue fire is at 2 to 4.30 AM
The following are safe tips for climbing Ijen Crater :
- Eat and rest enough before climbing. Don’t stay up late.
- Wear thick clothing to anticipate the cold temperatures, especially when going on a midnight hike to see the Blue Fire.
- Wear sports shoes with non-slip footwear.
- Also wear a head covering, gloves, and especially a Gas mask to prevent inhalation of sulfur fumes.
- Items that must be brought: raincoat, small flashlight, canned oxygen or medicine for asthma sufferers.
- Start walking at a slow to moderate rhythm. It is recommended to take a short break 1-2 times in the middle of the climb.
- Drinking water can reduce thirst and dry throat due to the influence of sulfur fumes.
